The appearance of leather seen in LV bags are sometimes deceiving since its PVC are crafted and textured according to the real leather. few of my customers almost returned their LV canvas handbags because they’re not real leather, which is correct. Therefore let’s have a better understanding about the materials used to build your beloved LV handbags.

1. Coated canvas

One of Louis Vuitton’s signature material is their coated canvas. People would easily recognize the brand just by looking at the damier or monogram coated canvas. Actually, judging by the name, coated canvas is merely layer of cotton canvas that has been treated with the well-known plastic derivative PVC (polyvinylchloride). It might look like leather from afar, but if you touch it, coated canvas will give you different feel that definitely not like leather. Since coated canvas has become staple material from Louis Vuitton, we have to give it honorary mention. One thing for sure, coated canvas will last a very long time. It is pretty easy to maintain, and also easy to be cleaned.

2. Empreinte leather

The strongest leather that Louis Vuitton ever made! It is very easy to be cleaned, you can use soft cloth to remove the dirt or stained on your bag. If the stain is quite stubborn, it is safe to use leather cleaner. Based on our personal experience, we recommend you to use foam based leather cleaner since foam is relatively gentler and more effective than liquids. Empreinte leather also relatively safe against water, though it doesn’t mean that you can freely carry your bag under heavy rain without any protection. When it comes to leather, it is still best to use raincape to protect your bag. But few drops of water wouldn’t bring any damage to empreinte leather. You just have to wipe it immediately. The only weakness is the weight. Any kind of bags made out of empreinte leather are generally heavy. So if you are looking for something light, empreinte leather might not suit you.

3. Epi leather

Epi leather is one of the first leather lines introduced by Louis Vuitton. The process of making epi leather is quite complex, which is creating grained texture with two tones effect. Epi leather can withstand water drops, so you don’t have to be worry when carrying epi leather in rainy season. The leather itself is also scratch resistant, making this material perfect for you who are looking for easily-maintained bags.

4. Taurilon leather

This leather has soft grained texture that will remind you of Hermes’ Togo leather. Taurilon leather is commonly used for belts since its characteristic is soft. Taurilon leather is perfect for making anything flexible or easy to bend. When used for bags, the leather will give you that classic feel, and also thanks to its grained texture, taurilon leather is not prone to scratches.
